Greyton is a wonderful place for animal lovers
Fires in Greyton

Fires are an inevitable and seasonal part of life in Greyton, as the dense vegetation surrounding the village and strong winds create the perfect environment for flare-ups.
Greyton's fynbos and pristine mountains offer some of the best outdoor experiences in the country. Fynbos is a unique shrubland vegetation of South Africa's Cape region. It's fire-dependent and burns naturally, with fires occurring on average every twelve to fifteen years, which is essential for its survival and biodiversity. Not only does fynbos require fire and smoke in order for seeds to germinate, but fire also recycles organic matter into nutrients, which are essential for plant growth. It also clears the habitat, which creates space for new growth.
We're blessed with an amazing group of fire fighting volunteers in our little village who do their utmost to prevent devastating damage to the vegetation in our area, whilst still respecting the natural order of these cycles.
