Fynbos is a unique shrubland vegetation of South Africa's Cape region. It's fire-dependent and burns naturally, with fires occurring on average every twelve to fifteen years, which is essential for its survival and biodiversity. Not only does fynbos require fire and smoke in order for seeds to germinate, but fire also recycles organic matter into nutrients, which are essential for plant growth. It also clears the habitat, which creates space for new growth.

We're blessed with an amazing group of fire fighting volunteers in our little village who do their utmost to prevent devastating damage to the vegetation in our area, whilst still respecting the natural order of these cycles.

Dogs, dogs everywhere

One of the first things you’ll notice when entering Greyton, is the sheer number of people walking their dogs in the village. Yes, we all love dogs! In fact, we love dogs so much that they’re always welcome in our restaurant.

Lazlo is one such a special little dog; he has boundless energy, plays with his toys with gusto and permanently appears to be smiling. He truly is the embodiment of a happy dog.
Besides being super cute, he’s also very friendly and loves exploring. If you’re very lucky, you might spot him when he’s being taken for a walk.

Lazo was the inspiration for the logo of our dog biscuits, Wonky Bones, which are baked at our premises at the Old Potter’s Inn. Be sure to ask our restaurant personnel for a free biscuit for your dog when bringing them around.

Great entertainment in the Overberg

Greyton is a beautiful and lively little village in the Overberg. It's not far from Cape Town and offers so much in terms of natural beauty, activities and much more.

This Saturday, Jake Gunn and Gerhardt Claassen will be performing at 1854 Restaurant (which happens to be directly adjacent to our premises). Bookings are essential, as this is a show well worth seeing.

Take a break from the mundane, get on the road and explore.

Canola flowers everywhere

When the horizon appears as if God Himself took a bright, yellow highlighter and coloured in much of the landscape, you know it’s winter in the Overberg. The canola flowers are in full bloom and are characterised by their striking yellow petals that seem to radiate a cheerful glow across the fields. This, in contrast with their beautiful green leaves, create an eye-catching visual spectacle. They’re not only a feast for the eyes but also a crucial component of the ecosystem’s health and balance.

The canola flowers are almost at their most beautiful and anyone looking for fantastic photo opportunities should definitely head our way within the next month.

Two days of unlimited wine tasting kicked off on Friday, 14 July 2023, and we were the proud hosts of The Wine Thief and Lord’s wines during the first Fire & Wine event.

It was a weekend filled with exclusive tastings with winemakers, hosted in cosy venues with roaring fireplaces and good old fashioned small-town hospitality. The weather was perfect for participants to socialise and exchange opinions, learn from each other’s experiences and discover new favourites.

Our restaurant included a lovely, Asian-style pork belly and fragrant Bobotie with various baked desserts to accompany the great wines on offer. Paul provided live music and his clarinet was the perfect accompaniment to the carefree and casual atmosphere.

Mountain Marathon

Competitors were undeterred by the weather while tightening their laces and adjusting their gear (some taking a deep breath to mentally prepare for the challenging yet rewarding experience which lay ahead).

This year’s route once again included the rugged and scenic terrain of the mountains, but besides the uneven surfaces, recent excessive rainfall and the resulting effect on the roads and route made it a demanding and physically intense two days.

The runners set off at a brisk pace and gave it everything they had. Next year, we hope to have snowcapped mountains to add to the adventure.

Congratulations to Nelius Swart and Catherine Flanagan for winning their respective categories.

Winter is here!

It’s been a few weeks of preparation for the colder months in our little village; we’ve stocked up on firewood, we have plenty of beer and our pizza oven is fired up and ready to go.

Anyone who gets the opportunity to visit Greyton is greeted by a tapestry of colours, textures and patterns along the R406, as the farmers have now sown their crops for the season. Needless to say, we eagerly await the bright yellow canola flowers (if you haven’t yet taken advantage of these for a photo opportunity, you’re missing out).

When approaching Genadendal and Greyton, you’ll be greeted by majestic mountain peaks and we sincerely hope to see snow on these sometime soon.

The rugged landscapes and breath-taking views create a sense of awe and provide a serene backdrop for relaxation and adventure.

Apart from outdoor activities, you also get the chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. The village exudes a charming ambiance with quaint shops, a Saturday market and excellent restaurants.
Get away from the hustle and bustle of your daily routine, come breathe in the fresh air, marvel at the beautiful landscapes and find rejuvenation amidst the serenity of nature.
